Analyzing hospital business units for a reorganization

50:49Recorded on 21 June 2023 at TU Eindhoven

Stefan Wick(Universitätshospital Zürich, Switzerland)

Stefan's data wrangling was a crucial success factor for applying process mining to his healthcare processes. He shows two concrete examples of the data transformations he had to do.

Synopsis

The University Hospital Zurich (USZ) is one of the biggest hospitals in Switzerland. Stefan is a process manager in the business development team. He presents two process mining examples from his hospital.

One case was a reorganization case: USZ wanted to restructure nine hospital business units into three new divisions. The goal was to group existing departments that work closely together in the same division, where possible. Stefan used process mining to analyze the relationship between clinics based on their interactions to ensure the correct placement. The other case was about optimizing admission and discharge times.

Stefan shows in detail both the massaging of the data he had to do and the resulting views he could create in Disco. Overall, he had to split the data, duplicate records, sort events, split cases, and aggregate unit descriptions to the right granularity. He also encourages us to document our analyses and data transformations using the recipe functionality.
