Hi Jan,

Thanks for the contribution. Yes, I agree that anything that prompts people to start asking further questions is good. And putting the example in their context is important in my experience, too.

But starting not from the problem but from the solution (and them asking why they would want to do that), how hard have you found it to convince them that they actually do want to do this? Just curious.

I noticed this blog post was created some time ago, but as I just discovered it, I'm still going to leave a reply.
This is my elevators pitch for process discovery, that I use in contacts with organisations (where I assume they now what a process is).

"Your organisation uses software that leaves traces from which we can automatically discover your processes"

I experience this to be a good start point from where these people start questioning me about why they would want to do that. In answering this questions I try to argument with examples from their context.

Hi Joos,

Thanks for the reply :)

You are absolutely right. Without the pictures, and perhaps even for friends and family in general, the above would not really work. It's still a bit like in a scientific paper..

What I find is that the pitch needs to be adapted to the person you talk to (getting the terminology and example right so that people understand you). And adaptation is even more important when talking about the benefits of process mining, which can be really very different!

Hey Anne,

Nice elevator pitch ;)
But I was wondering, how would your process mining elevator pitch be if it really was in an elevator and you only had words to get the message across?
For the pitch above the images are really important. How would you do it without pictures?

What I always try to do when I explain the concept of process mining to my family or friends is to think of an example close to their daily life. First introduce the notion of a process (by an example). Then a system that guides this process and stores information. And then explain that process mining uses that information for all kinds of analysis.

Good luck with selling process mining in elevators ;)
